My alarm goes off at 3.45am. After arriving late the night before, I curse myself for booking this photography tour on my first day in Hoi An. I roll out of bed, get dressed, grab my camera gear and wait in the hotel lobby for the photography tour guide.
We drive for about 15 minutes from Hoi An Ancient Town and arrive at Duy Hải fishing port. Over coffee, Etienne (our guide) from Hoi An Photo Tour and Workshop instructs us on what to expect.
At sunrise, the boats return from a night of fishing. The men unload the nights' catch to the women, who prepare everything for sale.
Making fish sauce is disgustingly pungent—sardines ferment in concrete buckets for twelve months before the mixture is strained into bamboo baskets.
The leftovers are fed to pigs, there is no waste.
Along the way we were warmly invited into the homes of a few local people that live behind the fishing port.
It was only 8am but the thermometer was nearing 40 degrees. Local boat builders were maintaining the boats while I was busy wiping my brow between shutter clicks.
In Hoi An and interested in photography? Take a tour or workshop with Etienne — I highly recommend it. 5 stars!
