Avignon, the first stop on our country journey through France; about 100 kms north-west of Marseilles or 17 minutes by high-speed rail.
A preserved wall-city that was home to seven successive French popes between 1309 and 1377.
Palais des Papes (Papal Palace)
The high street
Bustling high street, plenty of shopping and the food at MarchĂŠ les Halles dâAvignon (markets) was the best on our holiday. Afternoons were spent in the courtyard of our palatial townhouse indulging in the creamiest of cheeses and tasting the quality French wine from the surrounding regions. Oh, and Champaign from up north.
Some of the travelling party spontaneously âmodellingâ in the backstreets of Avignon.
montmorillon
Six travellers, six large suitcases and 650kms to cover; driving for over 10 hours in an eight seat Citroen, it wasnât a comfortable ride for anyone. Well done to Ali, our extremely competent driver for getting us to our destination safely.

Chambord & Chenonceau
It takes something special to leave me speechless; seeing the Empire State Building and Eiffel Tower for the first time did it. Château de Chambord and Château de Chenonceauâboth in the Loire Valleyâdid as well.
Château de Chambord
The grandeur. The opulence.
Château de Chenonceau
Our relaxing fortnight in country France came to an end in Montmorillon, 358km south-west of Paris. A quaint town that I hope to visit again someday.
